Missing from the table: Marsham Court and the Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott. Both are reported to have seasonal outdoor pools, but neither hotel website could be read to confirm dates or hours.

Indoor or outdoor: which pools are open in half term?

For an October, February or Easter break, the outdoor-only hotels are the ones to check. The Cumberland's pool is heated only from late spring through summer. Between October and April it runs as a cold-water dipping pool, 8am to 4.30pm daily, at £5.50 a person with a hot drink included, and it is for hotel residents only. The Haven Hotel's outdoor pool closes for the winter from 30 September, though its indoor hydrotherapy pool stays.

Durley Dean, The Riviera and Hotel Collingwood each say their heated indoor pool is open all year. Booking a school-holiday week at one of these rules out the outdoor-season question.

When can children swim?

House rules on children differ more than the pools do. THE NICI runs children's splash times twice a day, 9am to 10am and 4pm to 5pm, and its family page says all ages are welcome. The Royal Bath has a separate children's splash pool, and its child swim hours run 8am to 7pm with last entry at 6pm. Under-16s there must be with an adult, and the hotel notes that hours can change over the festive period and on bank holidays.

Durley Dean contradicts itself. Its family page says children may use the pool until 6.30pm each day with an adult, while its FAQ says children have access until 8pm. Plan around 6.30pm, or confirm with the hotel.

The Bournemouth West Cliff Hotel limits each adult to two children in the leisure pool, and under-18s cannot use its spa pool or gym. A family of two adults and five children would need to swim in shifts. Its spa is also down a flight of 15 steps, as its leisure page points out. Suncliff publishes a separate swimming school timetable, because the pool is sometimes booked for private lessons; check it against your dates if you plan to swim at a set time. Family room sizes at each hotel are compared on the family hotels page.

Is there a charge to use the pool?

Most hotels in the table include the pool in the room rate. The Royal Bath is the exception: residents pay £5 per adult a day (towel hire included) and £3 per child, with under-6s free.

Some hotels also sell pool access to people who are not staying, which is useful for a day out or for guests at a hotel without a pool.

Pools by the beach

If a pool and a short walk to the sand both matter, the Sandbanks peninsula has the two hotels in the table at beach level. Sandbanks Hotel has a 10-metre heated indoor pool with a shallow area for small children, open 9am to 5pm, next to a beach it describes as a few steps from its terrace. The Haven Hotel has direct beach access, though its beach is tidal and not lifeguarded.

In Bournemouth itself, the pools are mostly on the clifftops. Which hotels have sea-facing rooms, and how to get from the East Cliff down to the promenade while the East Cliff lift is closed, is set out in the sea-view hotels comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an indoor pool in Bournemouth open all winter?

Yes, at several hotels. Durley Dean, The Riviera and Hotel Collingwood each describe a heated indoor pool open year-round, and Suncliff, the Bournemouth West Cliff Hotel and The Royal Bath also have indoor pools. Hotels can close pools for maintenance, so check close to the date.

Do any Bournemouth hotels have a children's pool?

The Royal Bath has a separate children's splash pool alongside its main heated pool. Sandbanks Hotel describes a shallow, child-friendly area within its 10-metre indoor pool.

Can I bring a dog to a hotel with a pool?

Yes. THE NICI says its Family Annexe Rooms welcome dogs, and The Cumberland lists pets as accepted. Dog fees and rules are compared in dog-friendly hotels in Bournemouth.
